The doctoral program in Reading/Literacy (Curriculum, Instruction & the Science of Learning) is designed for educators who seek additional knowledge in literacy related scholarship, research, theory, and practice. Doctoral candidates consult with faculty to design a course of study related to areas of interest such as classroom discourse, cultural and linguistic diversity, digital literacies, reading comprehension and strategies; theories of language, literacy, and learning; writing and multimodal composition, teacher education, and other areas across pre-K to college-level teaching.
The Literacy Specialist Program leads to dual certifications: (a) B-6 Literacy Specialist and (b) 5-12 Literacy Specialist. Certification is required to be a New York State Reading Teacher.
This is a 36-37 hour program including courses in primary, elementary, and secondary reading; language, literacy and culture; diagnosis and reading re-mediation; a clinic-based practicum on the UB campus and a summer classroom-based practicum at an elementary school in the area.
The Childhood Education: Literacy Emphasis Program is an extension of the Childhood Education Ed.M. program and leads to Childhood Education professional certification for grades 1-6. This program does not lead to certification as a New York State Reading Teacher.
The Professional program in childhood education is designed for graduate students who completed an approved undergraduate major and hold NYS Initial certification in childhood education.
The Certificate of Advanced Study in Literacy Teaching and Learning is designed for teachers who have already been certified to teach in the areas of early childhood, childhood, adolescence, or related educational areas (e.g., teaching English language learners; special education, etc.) or educational professionals who desire more experience in foundations of literacy learning and teaching.
