FALL & SPRING DIAGNOSTIC EVALUATION & INTENSIVE TUTORING
Fall and spring tutoring sessions occur on-site at CLaRI. For 12 weeks, children come to CLaRI two times a week (Mondays and Wednesdays or Tuesdays and Thursdays) for intensive, one-on-one tutoring. Each tutoring session is 75 minutes in length, for a total of 150 minutes of tutoring each week. Tutoring is always held from 4:30 to 5:45 p.m. Children receive instruction from the same clinician or clinical team during their 12-week session. In many cases, the clinician or clinicians who administered the diagnostic evaluation also provides instruction. Each child also has his or her own personalized tutoring space, where only he or she receives tutoring. After tutoring, parents receive an extensive report detailing their child’s instruction, academic progress, and suggestions for further instruction. CLaRI is a small reading center dedicated to helping children struggling with reading and writing. As such, we have limited enrollment for fall and spring after-school, intensive tutoring.
DIAGNOSTIC READING EVALUATION
A diagnostic evaluation by CLaRI clinicians is required the semester prior to after-school, intensive tutoring. Diagnostic reading evaluations are conducted twice each year: once in the fall (late October/early November) and once in the spring (late March/early April). Children receiving diagnostic reading evaluations come to CLaRI for up to three hours on two consecutive Saturdays, for a total of 6 hours. The diagnostic evaluation consists of a variety of assessments to determine a child’s instructional reading level – that is, the reading level at which instruction should occur. The evaluation also determines a child’s decoding, spelling, writing, vocabulary, and comprehension development. The results of the evaluation allow CLaRI clinicians to create developmentally appropriate and individualized literacy instruction for each child. Several weeks after the diagnostic evaluation, a diagnostic report, summarizing all findings and providing instructional goals for literacy tutoring, is mailed to parents. It is also possible to discuss the results of the diagnostic evaluation, in person, with the Associate Director.
Diagnostic and instructional services are provided by University at Buffalo graduate students seeking their Master’s as Literacy Specialists. All clinicians are certified teachers and have finished most or all of their core literacy course work. Literacy education faculty members with a Ph.D. in Reading Education instruct and closely supervise clinicians as they provide diagnostic and instructional services.
FALL & SPRING DIAGNOSTIC EVALUATION FEES
CLaRI clinicians and faculty work hard to create an individualized diagnostic reading assessment for each child by thoroughly reviewing parent and school information about the child before he or she comes to CLaRI. As such, A non-refundable, full payment of $200 and a completed CLaRI application are required to reserve a child’s diagnostic reading evaluation spot. A completed application alone will not secure an evaluation spot. Payment and the application must be received prior to the diagnostic reading evaluation. We accept cash, check, money order (payable to the University at Buffalo), and credit cards (Visa, MasterCard, Discover, & American Express). We will not prorate or refund tuition for vacations or time missed. We will only refund tuition for days that CLaRI is expectantly closed or a teacher is not available. It is not possible to reschedule or make up diagnostic reading evaluation days as CLaRI clinicians participate in the evaluation as part of a university course with set days and times.
